Penland, Victoria M. CARLSBAD -- Victoria M. Penland "Vicky" passed away at home on June 13, 2013, at the age of 66, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. At her side was her devoted partner, Aletha "Lee" Rautenkranz and her loving brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Lynn Penland.
Vicky, a California native, was the daughter of Guy M. and Isabella A. Penland. Throughout her life, her infectious smile and wonderful sense of humor inspired all those around her. She was mischievous and put some "fun" in every day.
In the professional arena, Vicky retired in 2006 after serving more than 28 years in the San Diego healthcare arena. During her career, she served as Administrator/COO of Pomerado Hospital, Administrator/COO of Palomar Medical Center, Acting CEO of Palomar Pomerado Health System, Vice President of Clinical Services at Sharp Healthcare, and CEO of the Council of Community Clinics.
Vicky was also an advocate for the elderly and for medically underserved populations, and was honored by many public and private organizations for her contributions and accomplishments, including receipt of the Boyce Humanitarian Award in 1999. Additionally, Vicky served for many years on the Board of Directors of The Elizabeth Hospice, and most recently served as the Treasurer on the Board of Directors of St. Paul's Episcopal Service in San Diego.
Whenever possible, she and her beloved partner, Lee, enjoyed touring with the Palomar A's in the Model A they restored and appropriately named "Tuffy". They also enjoyed camping and visiting historic sites and national parks.
Other family members who will miss her smiling face are her nieces Nicole, Alison and Tang, and her nephews Robert Jr., and Guy Robert.
A service to celebrate Vicky's life will be held at Eternal Hills, 1998 S. El Camino Real, Oceanside, on June 28, 2013, at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, Vicky requested that donations be made in her name to either The Elizabeth Hospice at www.elizabethhospice.org (760-737-2050) or to St. Paul's Senior Homes & Services at www.stpaulseniors.org (619-239-6900).
