John H. Powers

Funeral services for John H. Powers, age 96 of Monroe Avenue in Ogdensburg will be held on Friday (May 23, 2014) beginning with calling hours at 12:00pm followed by the funeral service at 1:00pm at Foxwood Memorial Park with Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating. Mr. Powers passed away at his home on Wednesday (May 21, 2014) surrounded by his loving family.

Surviving is his daughter Doris Nugent of Ogdensburg; three grandchildren Joshua Nugent & his companion JoAnna Saunders, Nicholas Nugent & his companion Kirsty VanArnam, and Jessica Nugent all of Ogdensburg. His wife Helen Powers and his son-in-law Francis Nugent predeceased him.

John was born on September 7, 1917 in Kingston, Ontario CANADA, the son of Cecil & Margaret C. (Carney) Powers. He attended Ogdensburg schools for his education and entered the US Army during WWII. After receiving his honorable discharge, he later married Helen W. Wade on October 11, 1947 at St. Mary’s Church in Canton with Rev. Robert J. McCarthy officiating their marriage.

John worked at the Standard Shade Roller Company in Ogdensburg for 47 years, and retired as their operations manager in 1988. He was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral Parish, Rotary International where he received The Paul Harris Fellow recognition award, and socializing at Philips Diner with his friends. He enjoyed doing maintenance around the house, traveling and spending time with family. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of St. Lawrence County.
