

A Memorial Service for Margaret W.D. Stewart, age 93 of County Route 6 Hammond, will be held at 3:00pm on Saturday May 9, 2015 at at the 1st Congregational Church of Morristown in Brier Hill with Pastor David Sheppard officiating. Calling hours will be held at the church also on Saturday from 2:00pm until the time of the service. Burial will take place at the Old Hammond Cemetery with a reception following at the Village Hall in Hammond. Mrs. Stewart passed away on January 19, 2015 at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center.
Margaret was born on May 12, 1921 at Thistledown Cottage Balbeggie, Perth Scotland, the daughter of George & Margaret (Douglas) Gardiner.
During World War II, Mrs. Stewart served with the 40th Perthshire Company of the Black Watch Royal Highland Regiment. On February 10th 1940, she married George Stewart of Longforgan Scotland who, at the time, was serving with the Scots Guards Regiment.
After the end of World War II, the family decided to immigrate to the USA. They arrived on May 1, 1956 with children Keith, Brian and Deirdre to run the Lawrence Cuthbert dairy and sheep farm on the Chippewa Bay Road in Hammond. In 1960, Margaret and George purchased their own farm on the Chippewa Bay Road and have lived there since.
She is survived by her children Deirdre of Ogdensburg, Graeme & his wife Sue of Saugerties and Bruce & his wife Becky of Hammond; daughter-in-laws Kathy Stewart of Ogdensburg and Gail Stewart of FL along with nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews in Scotland. Margaret was predeceased by her husband George on July 28, 1982; a granddaughter Heather in 1977, a son Keith in 2011 and a son Brian in 2014.
Mrs. Stewart was a member of the Chippewa Bay Homemakers since 1951, the leader of the Chippewa Bay 4-H Club for fifteen years, served on the St. Lawrence County Cooperative Extension 4-H Committee, Membership Chair for the New York State Jersey Cattle Club and Youth Committee for two years, a member of the Order of the Eastern Stars since 1953 and was the District Deputy Grand Matron for the first St. Lawrence District in 1972.
