Helen Marie Cozad, 82, of Oklahoma City, passed away on January 17, 2025. Helen was born on June 27, 1942, in Pratt, Kansas, to John and Marie Mitchell. She was raised in Emporia, Kansas, where she developed a love for roller skating.
A visit to the tennis courts with her lifelong friend, Margaret Facklam, introduced her to Ken, her husband of nearly 64 years. Helen attended Emporia High School, where she was named Miss January and was a candidate for Centennial Queen.
Helen was a devoted wife and mother who worked for Hallmark Cards in Kansas City and, later in life, as a cardiology technician. Her passion was her family. A talented seamstress and cook, she was deeply involved in her children’s lives. She served as a leader for Blue Birds and volunteered in her children’s classrooms. While Ken coached Little League, Helen was by his side as a scorekeeper, assistant, and unwavering support—just as she was throughout their life together.
Helen was a longtime member and servant of Redeemer Reformed Church in Oklahoma City, whose congregation has been a wonderful source of support for the family.
Helen was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1973. While the disease eventually took her physical strength, her spirit remained free. Her positive outlook and determination to thrive kept the disease in the shadows for many years. Though the illness imposed limitations, her vitality and resilience always triumphed.
Helen was a passionate fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. Whether cheering from the stands of Arrowhead Stadium or wearing her jersey in her favorite chair at home, she never missed a game. She was also a devoted fan of Neil Diamond and never missed a local concert.
Helen is survived by her husband, Kenneth; her children, Craig and his wife, Brenda, of Mesquite, Texas; Christy Bryan and her husband, Brett, of Edmond, Oklahoma; and Brian and his wife, Christy, of Bixby, Oklahoma. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Chrystle, Mikell, Miranda, John, and Steve; and three great-granddaughters: Lincoln, Murphy, and Riley.
Helen was preceded in death by her son, Mark; her parents, John and Marie Mitchell; and her brother, James.
