Cousin Rod and I spent many summers together at our grandparents farm in Marcus, Iowa. I know we always worked hard and played hard, but for some reason all I can remember is the “working hard” part...especially during hay baling time! Rod and I always had to flip a coin to see who the (not so) lucky “inside the barn” hay stacker was going to be.

During the summer of ‘63, we all autographed the concrete steps we poured to a cattle waterer. These concrete steps are still on the farm today.

Our temporal life was great Rod...can’t imagine what our eternal life will be like. I’ll see you then Rod!

With all my love, your cousin Joel

One day Rod became a part of my family. I don't know where it was, what family event it was, or even what year it was, but one day he showed up at a family holiday and he never stopped showing up! I don't even remember what holidays were like before Rod was there. He may have been soft-spoken, but his kind, warm, cheerful presence has been a significant part of our gatherings for years! He will greatly missed.

My Grizzly Bear was such a gentle and warm person. He always wanted the best for others, and never put himself first. Last year, he came to see me dance in my end of year showcase for the first time. Right before the show started, there was a hug thunderstorm and he got soaked. His clothes were sopping wet, and yet he stayed and sat through the whole entire show. He could have left to dry off and put new clothes on, but he stayed to watch me dance. I felt so bad when I found out he was uncomfortable the whole time, but he didn't seem to mind. He was always so selfless and giving, and I didn't fully realize that until that day. He truly was just a big, furry, lovable bear. His hugs were always so tight and comforting, and I never wanted to let go. I love and miss him so much. I will be thinking of him everyday.

When I think of Rod, it’s his warm eyes and sweet smile that comes first. Then the shared love of coffee (Sweet Bay Coffee Company) and music by Alison Krauss. He was a steady Spades player and patiently indulged our family love fest for game after game after game. He and Kendra were always partners; wouldn’t have it any other way. He talked about how lucky he felt to have been part of Kendras life and share their love of horses. Thanksgiving will not be the same. Rod and I would take turns making each other cups of coffee. For us it became a token of friendship. When I think of Rod I automatically smile. That’s how I choose to continue remembering my friend.

Doing projects with Rod over the years. Rod was always good to work with. We had fun talking motorcycles as well. :)

I am blessed by is moments of gentleness,
Like butterfly kisses against my cheek.

I am humbled by his generosity,
Content to allow us to bask in his generosity.

I yearn for his earthiness,
Like breathing in the scent of pine trees and soil
After a soaking rain.

He had a way about him ...
Patient, open, and kind.

Oceans of love in his placid eyes,
Mountains of comfort in his sloping shoulders,
Waves of tenderness in his crooked smile,
Holding our hearts in his wide world.

Missing you -- your daughter-in-love, Amy
