Ruth’s early life was shaped by both strong roots and frequent moves, as her father’s work with Wilson Foods took the family to different parts of the country. She spent her childhood in Pasadena, California, and later Hinsdale, Illinois, where she graduated with the Class of 1970. These early experiences gave Ruth a lifelong ability to adapt and find beauty and belonging wherever she went.
She attended Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia, and later earned her bachelor’s degree in education and her teaching certificate from the University of Central Oklahoma in 1994. She shared her creativity as an art teacher and a substitute for Oklahoma City Public Schools, where she had a quiet way of inspiring others to learn.
On March 28, 1976, she married the love of her life, Jim Griffin. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, creativity, and adventure. They shared a passion for travel, collecting antiques, and creating warm, welcoming homes. Ruth and Jim were also co-owners of Med Depot and owners of RJG Properties, building a successful partnership in both work and life until their retirement in 2006.
Ruth was the steady heart of her family. She was the one who kept everyone’s spirits up, choosing to stay happy and focused on the beauty of life. Because she was always so resilient, her presence brought a sense of permanence and comfort to everyone who knew her. Even after Jim’s passing, she continued to travel and create meaningful memories, carrying forward the spirit of adventure they shared.
Her love of gardening was a reflection of her soul: patient, attentive, and full of quiet care. She had a natural gift for nurturing life, transforming her surroundings into peaceful, vibrant gardens. Whether she was cooking for friends, weaving with the Basket Weavers Association, or caring for her many animals, Ruth moved through the world with a genuine happiness that made everyone feel welcome.
Ruth was a loyal friend, always ready for a laugh and meaningful conversation. She taught her children by example—to be open-minded, to seek knowledge, and to face the world with kindness. She will be remembered for her tender heart, her unshakeable optimism, and the countless small moments of warmth and beauty she created.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Griffin; her parents, John and Ruth Orcutt; her son, James Samuel Griffin; her brother, Bill Orcutt; and her niece, Becky Orcutt.
She is survived by her daughter, Laura Griffin of Oklahoma City; extended family across the country; her aunt, Sara Saulnier of Georgetown, Texas; and many dear friends who became like family.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the Memorial Park Cemetery Historic Chapel in Oklahoma City (13400 N Kelley Ave, OKC, OK, 73131). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ruth’s memory to a local animal shelter, honoring her lifelong compassion for animals.
