Sharon Marie Sisson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2025, at the age of 68 in Edmond, Oklahoma. She was born on August 2, 1956, in Henryetta, Oklahoma, the eighth of twelve children to George and Nalda Kern.
Sharon’s journey was one of deep commitment, remarkable strength, and boundless love. A proud graduate of Henryetta High School, she continued her education at Northeastern State University before earning her nursing degree from Seminole State College. Sharon dedicated over 40 years of her life to the nursing profession, most notably at Integris Baptist Medical Center and OU Edmond Medical Center. Her career was a testament to her unwavering care, intelligence, and compassion. As a Registered Nurse, she served in numerous prestigious roles, including Heart Transplant Coordinator at Integris Baptist Medical Center. Sharon was a published author in medical journals and received numerous accolades for her contributions to the field, including the Nancy Holland Employee of the Year award in 2005. She retired from OU Edmond Medical Center in 2021, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and expertise. Sharon cherished the many friendships she shared with her sisterhood of nurses throughout her long career, especially with Lovely, Barb, Margie, Charla, LaWanda and Karen.
Sharon’s love for her family was immeasurable. She shared 50 beautiful years with her husband, Neal Wayne Sisson, with whom she would have celebrated 49 years of marriage in May. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, love, and unwavering support. Sharon was a devoted mother to her daughters, Lauren and Merideth, and her pride in their achievements was evident. She encouraged both of her daughters to pursue their dreams and achieve advanced degrees in law and social work, guiding them to find their own paths while always offering her love and wisdom.
Her greatest joy in life, however, was being “GiGi” to her precious granddaughter, Sissy. Sharon’s world was brighter with Sissy by her side, and she lived every day after her cancer diagnosis with a renewed sense of purpose—devoted to the light that Sissy brought into her life.
Sharon had a dry wit that would light up any room, always laughing at the idiosyncrasies of everyday life. She was highly spiritual, a devout Catholic, and a long-time parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Edmond, where her faith played an integral role in shaping her life. She found peace and comfort in her spirituality, and her belief in the importance of family and community was evident in everything she did.
A lover of life’s simple pleasures, Sharon enjoyed running, reading thrilling true crime novels, and spending time with her family and friends, especially lounging by the pool, cooking out with life long friends Debbie and Jim, and enjoying a good scary movie. She was an avid fan of OSU and Thunder basketball and found solace in the beauty of the ballet and the spirit of angels. Sharon also had a passion for collecting teapots, a hobby that was a reflection of her attention to detail and appreciation for the finer things in life.
In addition to her loving husband and daughters, Sharon is survived by her sons-in-law, Kevin Costello and Brent Buchheit, and her precious granddaughter, Sissy Costello. She is also survived by her siblings: Mike Kern of McAlester, OK; Mark and Sandy Kern of Edmond, OK; Vicky and Ron Fegaly of Tulsa, OK; Duke and Cindy Kern of Norman, OK; Margie Collett of Indiana; Greg and Lisa Kern of Oklahoma City, OK; Theresa Kern of Tulsa, OK; Renee Kern of Oklahoma City, OK; and John Kern of Denver, CO. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who loved her dearly.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, George and Nalda Kern, her sisters Pat Marshall and Deirdre Jackson, her sister-in-law Linda Kern, and nieces Amy Kern-Mitchell and Christi Jackson.
Sharon’s warmth, wisdom, humor, and love will be missed by all who knew her. Her legacy will live on through her family, her patients, and all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
As a lifelong lover of animals, particularly her rescue dogs Hallie, Pancake and Bella, as well as cats Rudy and Mischief, in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Safe Haven Animal Rescue in Oklahoma City in Sharon’s honor.
