The family moved to Lindsborg, Kansas in 1935. She played clarinet in band and orchestra, was a cheerleader and twirler. She also performed in several vocal groups including a 350-voice choir at Bethany College where she graduated with a degree in Art. After college she taught Art at Beloit, Kansas. In 1951 she married her high school sweetheart, John Winblad. The adventure of her marriage included moving to Oklahoma City in 1955, raising a family of three children, traveling throughout the United States and 21 other countries, and accompanying John to many American Fidelity conventions. She was confirmed in her faith at Messiah Lutheran Church in Lindsborg and became a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church where she was active the rest of her life. She was a gifted painter, but her real passions were her family and faith.
Shirley is survived by her husband John Winblad; daughter Debra Torri and her husband Tony, grandson Brian Torri and his wife Sadie, great-grandsons Brighton and Sullivan, granddaughter Lindsey Harper and her husband Steve, great-granddaughter Kristina and great-grandson Dakota; son David Winblad his wife Sherry, grandson Kevin Winblad and his wife Abbey, great-granddaughters Emily and Madeline, grandson Eric Winblad, his wife Natalie and great-granddaughter Jordan; son Richard Winblad, his wife Terri, granddaughter Channing, great-grandson Zane, granddaughter Onalise and grandson Scott; and sister Lanie Wingate. She is preceded in death by her parents and granddaughter Jennifer Torri.
