Irma Achenbach Scudder, was born on 22 March 1919 and passed away 1 December 2020. Irma was born in Hann Munden, Germany and immigrated to the United States with her parents, Fritz and Erna Achenbach, and her brother Hartwig, when she was 6 years old.
Her family settled in Orlando and founded the Open Air School. Irma went to Rollins College in Winter Park where she met her husband-to-be, Kenneth Scudder Jr. She graduated from Florida State Teachers’ College. Mrs. Scudder taught kindergarten for many years at the Open Air School and became the director upon her mother's retirement. She was active in Girl Scouts, first as a scout herself, then as a leader of a Brownie Scout and Girl Scout troop.
After retirement Irma volunteered at "We Care" and a number of other social support organizations. She was very active in the Unitarian Church and the Church Alliance for many years. Mrs. Scudder loved to travel. She was able to travel to most of the states in the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii. She traveled throughout Europe, some of the Caribbean Islands, Africa, Canada and Mexico.
Irma is survived by her brother, Hartwig; son, Ron Scudder of Livermore, California and her daughter, Sylvia Scudder of Gainesville, Florida.
