Bertha was born on January 13, 1917 in Victoria, Kansas to I.P. and Mary Ann Dreiling. She was the 9th of 9 siblings. She grew up in Victoria and completed her nursing education at St. Rose School of Nursing in Great Bend, Kansas. She became a Registered Nurse in 1939 and embarked on a long and varied career in the field of health care. Bertha worked as a nurse in a number of settings before eventually moving to the Kansas City area with her husband, Adolph Bollig. She moved to Roeland Park with Adolph and their children in 1955, where she resided until her death. Her professional career included working as a nurse at an ophthalmologist’s office, at old St. Mary’s Hospital, at Community Blood Center, as a school nurse at Bishop Miege High School, as an occupational health nurse at Ruberoid Roofing Company, and as an occupational health nurse at Colgate-Palmolive Company, where she retired after 15 years of service.
Bertha was a devoted mother, wife, and grandmother. She helped her children with their homework and enjoyed attending sporting events that her son, Richard, participated in. She was an excellent typist, and she spent many long hours typing Richard’s graduate school papers. She had a significant influence in the lives of her daughters, Maryann and Judy, and they followed her career path by becoming Registered Nurses. All of her children have had professional careers in the health care field.
After retiring from her nursing career, Bertha enjoyed caring for her grandchildren and attending their many activities, including dance recitals and sporting events. She also enjoyed baking, sewing, and crocheting. Her Monkey Bread was always a favorite at holiday gatherings. She enjoyed making costumes for her grandchildren and crocheting Afghans as gifts for family members.
Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph Bollig, on February 7th, 2010. She is survived by her children, Maryann Williams, Judy Sheridan, and Richard (Nancy) Bollig; grandchildren, Janet (John) Storey, David (Marie) Williams, Christopher Bollig, and Daniel Bollig; and her step-grandchildren, Courtney (Patrick) Doyle, Michael Luschen, and Eric Luschen; her great grandchildren, Hannah and Alex Storey; her sister-in-law, Katie Dreiling, and numerous nieces and nephews.
