He is survived by his wife, Kathy Kiser, Kansas City, MO; and daughter, Laura Capello-Suever, Overland Park, KS. He also leaves behind his son-in-law, Aaron Suever, and three cherished grandsons, Griffin (14), Darwin (12), and Emery Suever (six). He was grateful to have three grandsons and especially appreciated the ease of raising only one, well-behaved daughter (his words, not ours - we swear). John is preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth (Janssens) Capello (1981). We hope they are reminiscing and laughing over their vibrant, spirited grandsons.
John was born in Oahu and spent his childhood golfing and caddying on golf courses all over the island. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1971 and served our country proudly for four years. He earned his Black Belt in Hapkido and was a member of the US Karate team while in the Air Force. John settled in the Kansas City area and earned his A.A.S in Business from Longview Community College and attended Baker University. He received golf scholarships from both schools and competed on their golf teams.
Never one for a desk job, John enjoyed a career of working with many different people all day, always on the go. He was an owner/operator for Roadway Package System, Walker Towel and Uniform, and USF Distribution. John had a passion for golf, and we all hope God is understanding of him using His name in vein so often on the greens.
John was far from perfect, and he acknowledged he didn't always have the answers, often lost his temper, and acknowledged he was a flawed man. He taught grace and perseverance by example, asking for forgiveness and always up for giving others a second chance.
John passed away after eight years of health decline, from complications of early onset dementia and cerebral amyloid angiopathy.
We choose to remember him as the vibrant man he was, who loved live music (especially the blues), golfing, and always knew the best spots to get a bite to eat. We hope his biggest dilemma now is choosing between going to listen to BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, or Jimmy Hendrix, and which golf course to go play on next.
John's earthly body will be laid to rest on Friday, October 7th at 10am at the Leavenworth National Cemetery, 150 Muncie Road, Leavenworth, Kansas 66048 with a short graveside service. Bright colors, especially Hawaiian shirts, are encouraged. Please arrive around 9:45am at Leavenworth Nat'l Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to Youth on Course [https://youthoncourse.org/]. This nonprofit helps young golfers in Kansas City and nationwide have affordable access to rounds of golf.
John credited learning to play golf as a cornerstone to his development and identity. On the greens was where he felt closest to God, and golfing was when he felt his most authentic self. We know John would be humbled to have his spirit honored by other young people benefiting from the sport as he did.
