Mr. Nolan was born March 7, 1925 in Hawarden, IA to Robert and Joanna Nolan. The fourth of five children, John was raised on the family's farm during the great depression. He attended Hawarden High School where he played varsity basketball. After graduation he enlisted in the Army Air Corps on his 18th birthday.
After the war, he continued his education at St. Ambrose College in Davenport, IA graduating with a BA in Business. While at St. Ambrose he met Frances Ready, who would soon become his wife.
Upon Graduation, he chose Life Underwriting as his career. One of the reasons for this decision, was the impact of his father's death on his family while John was in military service. His successful career with National Life of Vermont led him to accept the challenge of building an agency for Mutual Benefit Life. He owned this agency until his semi-retirement in 1990. He remained active in financial services until well into his seventies.
During his career he was elected President of the Quad City Chapter of the Sales Executives Club, President of the Davenport Chapter of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) and President of the Iowa Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.
Mr. Nolan supported Catholic education. He was a member of the Building Committee which built the Holy Family Elementary School in Davenport and sent five children to Davenport's Assumption High School and on to graduation from Catholic colleges.
John enjoyed reading, golf, bridge and lively conversation. When visiting family and friends he made a point of speaking individually with all.
Frances "Fran" Ready and John Nolan were married on September 23, 1950 and raised five children in Davenport. They were together in love until Fran's passing in 2002
He is survived by two sisters, five children, ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters.
