Leonard was born September 6, 1930 in Sabetha, KS and spent his childhood and teenage years on the family farm in Seneca, KS. He graduated high school in 1948 and moved to Kansas City in 1950. It was there he met Patricia J. Wise in January of 1949. Their romance bloomed and they were married August 22, 1951. After coming to KC, he spent a brief time working at TWA before being drafted into the Army in March of 1952. Shortly after his return from service, he began what turned out to be a 38 year career with KCP&L, first as a groundman and then transferring to the Relay department until his retirement in 1992.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.
Leonard built his first house with the help of his brothers-in-law; a fact that he was quite proud of. Throughout his years as an adult, he enjoyed bowling, woodworking, family vacations, coaching youth baseball and watching his children become adults. He loved watching his grandchildren at school events, sports, and recitals. After retirement, he and his wife traveled to various parts of the US, Europe, and St. Thomas, USVI. He enjoyed golf, card games and his weekly lunches at McDonald’s with friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis A. Haefele and Ella (Hurley) Haefele; siblings, Louis W. Haefele and Mary Ann Beatty.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia J. (Wise) Haefele; children and spouses, William (Michele), Carol (Joe) Testa, Janet (Rod) Corn, Mike (Patty Bennett), John (Lori); 11 grandchildren, one great grandchild; sisters, Helen Schmelzle, Rose Solar and Betty Haefele and all his lunch pals – you know who you are!
Special thanks to the entire staff at Delmar Gardens of Overland Park, Catholic Communities Hospice and all his lunch pals. Online condolences may be left at www.mcgilleyhoge.com.
