
Mary Scott Hughes departed this life on Friday, June 5, 2015 in Prairie Village, KS. She was born on March 5, 1925 to Charles and Grace Kennemur Scott in Peach Orchard, AR. She attended the University of Arkansas before becoming a public accountant, offering consulting for small businesses. In 1982, Mary became a member of the Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, KS. There she met her future husband, John Hughes. They were later married in the Chapel in 1985. In 1990, they moved to Hot Springs Village in Arkansas but returned to the Kansas City area in 2010. Mary continued to retain many of her long-time PEO friends from Chapter C. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved son, Ronald Scott Martin; her husband, John Hughes; and three sisters, Louise Blackburn, Velva Floyd, and Charlene Samons. She is survived by her brother and his wife, Charles (Maxine) Scott of Summerville, SC; a sister, Kaye Boatner of Molalla, OR; and several nieces and nephews. Mary also leaves her special adopted family of Linda and Harold Smith and their children, Ryan (Amanda), Kevin, and Sarah, Mary’s godchild. She is also survived by three step-children, Judith Overson (Larry), Jeff Hughes (Deborah), and Laura Corogenes (Patrick). Mary was very grateful for the loving care offered by Gentiva Hospice during these final months. She was also grateful for the excellent care she received while living at Brighton Gardens in Prairie Village for the past five years.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 11th at 10:00 am at the Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS 66208. The family will receive friends at that time. Memorial contributions may be made to the Village Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Pinecrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Alexander, AR.
