Peter Christopher Horsley, 70, passed away August 21, 2021, peacefully at his home after a hard fought battle with cancer. Born on May 22nd 1951 in Wichita, KS to Don Horsley and Florence Jayne Lockhart. The youngest of four children: sisters, Christine Ghrist (Jim) and Lyn O’Bryan (Dan), and brother, John Horsley (Mary).
Peter studied psychology and education at the University of Kansas, graduating with a master’s degree. He would go on to have a 40+ year career as a counselor and educator. Peter was a gifted counselor, especially with children and worked in the Blue Valley, Shawnee Mission and Barstow school systems, among others. Peter’s passion for children could be felt by everyone he met and he continued working until his cancer forced him to stop shortly before his death.
A beloved father and grandfather, Peter is survived by his children, Jacob (Cortney) and Elizabeth Boyle (Christian) and grandchildren, Bax and Bo. Heartbroken by his passing we take solace in knowing he is no longer in pain and that he is reunited with his beloved mother Florence Jayne.
Peter was a devoted student of transcendental meditation. He learned TM as a young man and found no greater joy in life than its practice and study. He loved the TM community and often traveled to Fairfield, Iowa to meet with meditators from all over the world.
An avid environmentalist, Peter loved the natural world, and living a healthy lifestyle. Peter also enjoyed traveling (particularly to Colorado), hiking, cooking, reading, sports (especially the Royals and Jayhawks), the arts, music, film, NPR, PBS, and walks in the park with family and friends.
Peter will forever be remembered for his sharp wit and highly developed sense of humor, his work with children, and his strong desire to protect those who could not protect themselves. The world is a better place because he was in it.
A celebration of his life will take place on Friday, August 27th at 10:30 AM at McGilley-Hoge Funeral Home, with a visitation the night before, Thursday August 26th, from 5:30-7:30 PM.
