Rex Lee Workman, age 76, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly Friday morning, May 10, 2013 at home. A celebration of his life will be held at McGilley & Hoge Chapel located at 8024 Santa Fe Drive in Overland Park, Kansas. The gathering will occur on Saturday, May 18, 2013 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
Rex was born January 27, 1937, in Concordia, Kansas. Rex was a standout football player at Concordia High School and went on to play football at Montana State University. He was a member of the 1956 National Championship team that played in the Aluminum Bowl. He was inducted into the Montana State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987. Rex returned to Concordia and married his high school sweetheart, Donna Faye Logan. Rex and Donna had three children before her death in 1966. In 1969, Rex married Marjorie Ruth DeSico who had two children, and the family moved to Overland Park. Rex spent much of his career in sales with French Nelson Russell and the Kellogg Company.
Rex was a devoted and loving family man who shared his lifelong passion for boating with family and friends. The family could be found most summer weekends on local area lakes and especially enjoyed annual vacations to Table Rock Lake. We will always have wonderful memories of Rex as captain of the ship.
After retirement, Rex and Marjorie enjoyed traveling, socializing, and, most of all, dancing, until her death in 2010. When not out and about, Rex could typically be found in front of the TV with the remote in one hand, petting a dog with the other.
Rex loved to tell a good story, and he provided laughs and smiles to everyone who had the good fortune to hear them. His generous and caring nature will be missed.
Rex is survived by his five children, nine grandchildren, and dog, Annie: Daughter Christie Barfoot, son-in law Joel Barfoot, grandson Logan, and granddaughter Kyra of Glendale, AZ; daughter Cathie Winlaw, son-in-law Mark Winlaw, granddaughter Caitlin, and grandson Spencer of Winter Springs, FL; daughter Gia DeSico, grandson Austin DeSico, and granddaughter Samantha Smith of Kansas City, MO; son Gino DeSico of Overland Park, KS and granddaughter Giavanna Aplin of Thousand Oaks, CA; son Marc Workman, daughter-in-law Shannon Bingham, and granddaughters Shelby and Reid of Albuquerque, NM.
Also surviving are sisters: Sharon Roy, of Clyde, KS; Burnedette Workman of Concordia, KS; and Darlene Terry of Green River, WY; brothers Eddie Workman, James L. Workman, and Junior Workman all of Concordia, KS; Don Ramseyer of Clyde, KS; Frank Workman of Evanston, WY; and numerous nieces and nephews. Brother Durl Workman preceded him in death.
Rex loved his dogs. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Humane Society of KC, 5445 Parallel Pkwy, Kansas City, KS 66104, (913) 596-1000. Please offer condolences at www.mcgilleyhoge.com.
