Susan Glynn Rinella, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 17, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on April 23, 1939, in Kansas City, Missouri, Sue was the daughter of Jim and Catherine Audley Glynn and a lifelong resident of the area.
Sue attended St. James Grade School and Lillis High School, and later studied at Rockhurst College while working at BMA, where she met her future husband, Anthony John Rinella. They were married on June 17, 1961, and together raised six children in a home filled with faith and love.
Later in life, she worked as an administrative assistant at Sprint for many years. Upon retiring, she continued to give to others as a Catholic Charities volunteer.
Sue and Tony were founding members of Church of the Holy Cross, where they remained active in various ministries throughout their lives. In recognition of their dedication, they were honored with the Beacon of Light Award from Holy Cross in 2025.
Sue was preceded in death by her beloved husband Tony; her parents; her parents-in-law, Anthony and Angeline Rinella; her brother and sister-in-law, Kevin and Judy Glynn; her brother-in-law, Joe Accurso; and her sons-in-law, John Whigham and Rick Strecker.
She is survived by her six children: Kathy Strecker, Michael (Jennifer) Rinella, Ann Whigham, Mary Sue (Peter) LeBourveau, Nancy (Chad) LaSala, and Christi (Mark) Douglas. Sue was a proud grandmother to 20 grandchildren: Jordan Strecker, Kristin (Seth) Wiedel, Shannon (Adam) Sova, Mary Strecker; Kyle Whigham, Lindsey (David) Fratto, Curtis Whigham; Abby Kate, Grace, and Michael Vito LaSala; Andrew, Sarah, and Nathan LeBourveau; Jack, Josie, and Anne Rinella; Mae, Kate, Clare, and James Douglas. She was also blessed with six great-grandchildren: Nora, Tori, Leah, and Matthew Wiedel; Anthony Sova; and Freddy Fratto.
Sue is also survived by her sister, Nancy (Elmer) Rottinghaus; her brothers, Terence (Kathy) Glynn and Leo (Kathy) Glynn; her in-laws, Augustine Accurso and John (Carol) Rinella; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Sue found deep joy in her faith and treasured her family and her friendships. A true matriarch, Sue was happiest when serving others. She was a welcoming neighbor, a respected mentor, and a compassionate listener. Her practical wisdom and signature “Sue-isms” brought comfort and clarity to many. Her life beautifully reflected humility, kindness, and grace, leaving a lasting legacy in the lives of all who knew and loved her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at Church of the Holy Cross, 8311 West 93rd Street, Overland Park, KS 66212. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation beginning at 9:15 a.m., followed by the Rosary at 10:00 a.m. and words of remembrance prior to the Mass. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Lenexa, KS.
