

Thomas L Tierney, 78, passed away at home on Friday evening, February 13th, 2015. A rosary will be prayed at 5:00 p.m. on Friday February 20th with visitation following from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at McGilley & Hoge Funeral Home, 8024 Santa Fe Drive in Overland Park. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday February 21st at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 11300 W 103rd Street in Overland Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the National Parkinson Foundation Heartland.
Tom was born on January 29th, 1937 in Kansas City, MO to William and Pauline (Hutchinson) Tierney. He grew up in a large and close- knit family with 6 sisters and a brother. The family spent some of Tom’s early years in Pittsburg, KS, and later moved back to Kansas City, where Tom graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1955. While at St. Mary’s, Tom enjoyed playing football and baseball. He remained a huge baseball fan for his entire life and loved rooting for the Cardinals and Royals.
Upon graduation, Tom joined the United States Marine Corps, and was stationed in San Diego, Hawaii, and the Philippines, attaining the rank of Corporal. He was very proud of his time in the Marines and the many great experiences it provided.
Tom’s family was always his highest priority. A devoted and loving father, Tom was active in the lives of his children and enjoyed coaching baseball for his son Tommy and softball for his daughters Cecelia, Suzy, and Sandy. “BawBaw” was a big part of the lives of his grandchildren- babysitting, attending their sporting events and activities, and just spending quality time together. He was active in Christ The King Catholic parish in Kansas City, MO, and was always known and loved for his kindness and great sense of humor.
Tom enjoyed a long career in the banking profession in Kansas City, serving for many years as Vice President of Citizens Jackson County Bank, where he was beloved by his many customers and coworkers.
In 1994, Tom married Jane Edwards and embarked on a new, happy and fulfilling chapter in his life. He was a devoted husband and a loving father to Jane’s two sons Malcolm and Nick Edwards.
Tom and Jane enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe, going to movies and trying new restaurants together. They were members of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Overland Park, KS.
One of Tom’s favorite hobbies was bowling. He began by working in a bowling alley, setting pins at the young age of eight, and continued to bowl in leagues for most of his adult life. He always looked forward to “bowling night”, and he really enjoyed time spent with his team.
Tom was well known for his generous spirit and his many philanthropic endeavors. He was a longtime member & President of the Optimist Club and a board member of the Sertoma Club.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents and 3 siblings: his brother Bill Tierney; and sisters
Thelma Laidler and Elizabeth Davidson. He is survived by his wife Jane; children Cecelia Shepherd, Suzy Jolley (David), Tom Tierney Jr. (Darla), Sandy Rosenstock (David), Malcolm Edwards (Trecia), and Nick Edwards (Sonia Maria); grandchildren Michael Jolley (Abbie), Erin Koegel (John), Rachel and Lauren Rosenstock, Alison and Britney Shepherd, and Esobel Moore; sisters Patricia Hopper, Margaret Scassellati (Gene), Helen Zimmerman Maxwell & Anna Meyer (Jerry); and many nieces, nephews and friends.
