

Virginia Rose Matthews, born on September 6, 1926, in Kansas City, Missouri, passed away in the home of a daughter on February 3, 2016. Virginia devoted her life to family and church. Virginia was quick to laugh, loved making things, and respected everyone. She had a sweet and gentle soul that will forever live in our hearts.
Virginia was the youngest daughter of Margaret Rempe, a nurse who cared for the victims of the Influenza Epidemic of 1918, and Wesley Hall Gregory, an influential businessman in Kansas City in the 1920s. Virginia was an alumna of St. Teresa's Academy.
Virginia was a supporting and encouraging mother to her eight children, daughters: Marilyn (Bill) Marshall, Laurie (Scott) Sigman, and Janet (Rob) Mayer; and sons: Kenneth, Jim (Wendy), David, Donald (Linda), and Gary (Ann).
She is survived by three daughters, four sons, a brother, William H. Gregory, 13 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Laurel Lee DesMarteau, husband, Marvin K. Matthews, and son, Kenneth.
After retiring as a church secretary, Virginia volunteered her time at Queen of the Holy Rosary. She also devoted significant time and talent before and after retirement to fundraising by making and raffling dollhouses for The Sisters, Servants of Mary, Ministers to the Sick.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Virginia at 11:00am, on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Queen of the Holy Rosary, Overland Park, Kansas. Visitation will precede Mass at 10am. Graveside services, 12:30pm, Monday, February 8, at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Online condolences may be left at www.mcgilleyhoge.com.
