She was born in Baghdad, Iraq. Her parents, Raji Gharibian and Peruza, her family immigrated from Armenia and settled in Iraq following the Armenian Genocide.
Amal graduated from Baghdad University with a Bachelor's degree in Archaeology. She began her professional journey as a teacher, and later served at the Director of the Registration Department at the College of Pharmacy, then at the College of Dentistry, both at Baghdad University.
Amal's husband was Amanuel Al-Khayatt. In the early 1990s, the family moved to the Monterey Peninsula, where she taught Arabic at the Defense Language Institute for nearly 20 years.
She enjoyed reading, traveling, hosting and a lot of cooking.
Amal will be remembered most for her generosity, love, and the passion she gave to her family and close friends, always bringing smiles to many faces. Amal means "hope" in Arabic - and she truly embodied that. She was a remarkable woman, and we were blessed to have her in our lives.
She is the sister of Thouraia Toma, and was preceded in death by her siblings Adiba Mahroom, Widad Gharib, Adeeb Gharib, and Huda Gharib.
Amal is survived by her loving children - Nahil, Nahla, Nuha, and Sarmad - and her cherished grandchildren.
A funeral service for Amal will be held Wednesday, August 6, 2025 at 10:30 AM at Carmel Presbyterian Church, Junipero St & Ocean Ave, Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA 93921.
