
Big Sur ~ Barbara E. Spring, a well-known Northern California artist, passed away at her home on June 28. Born February 16, 1917 in Theydon Bois, Essex, England, she attended art school in England before serving in the Women’s Royal Air Force during World War II. Barbara immigrated to the United States as a “war bride” in 1946.
Barbara and her late husband, William, moved to Big Sur 39 years ago. A gifted wood sculptor, her work was represented at the Hawthorne Gallery. She became very involved in the community including membership in the Big Sur Historical Society. Barbara was an avid fan of opera and loved the many friends she made along the Big Sur coast.
Barbara is survived by her daughters, Cynthia Taylor of Sacramento and Frances (John) Hoeffel of San Francisco; her grandchildren, Jamie and Lauren Taylor and Sarah and Rachel Hoeffel and her great-grandchildren, Camila, Catalina, Celeste and Logan.
A Celebration of Barbara’s Life will be announced. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Big Sur Health Clinic or the Big Sur Volunteer Fire Brigade, Highway One, Big Sur, 93920.
