

Carmel ~ Eugene “Gene” M. Epstein, a native of San Francisco and fifty-year resident of Monterey County, passed away following a brave battle with emphysema. Known to his many friends as Gene or Gino, he received his BA Degree from UC Berkeley and was a graduate of UC Hastings Law School. Gene began his career as an Assistant District Attorney in San Francisco and was a Deputy District Attorney for Monterey County before beginning his private practice, retiring after a career spanning fifty years.
Gene served as President of the Monterey Bar Association in 1969 and President of the Palma Law Advisory Board from 1975 – 76. He was a member of the Hastings Foundation from 1979 – 85 and served on the Executive Committee of the Monterey Bar Association in 1984. Gene was a delegate to the Democratic Convention in Chicago in 1968.
Gene enjoyed cooking, playing tennis, Bridge, and listening to jazz along with his favorite hobbies of sketching and photography. He was an avid Basketball, Football and Baseball fan. He always looked forward to Spring Training trips in Scottsdale with his baseball friends. Tuesdays became special days for Gene to visit with his son Marty and bond over jazz and technology.
Gene is survived by his devoted wife of thirty years, Jackie; his children Marty (Lupe) and DJ (Kaisa); his stepchildren, Scott (Cathy) and Kelly (Vincent); his brother, Dr. John Epstein (Alice) and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Mildred, his brother, Dr. William Epstein and his parents Dr. Norman and Gertrude Epstein.
Memorial services will take place at The Paul Mortuary Chapel this Friday, November 15 at 11:00 AM.
