Gary was born on March 19, 1943 in Taft, CA. He was the eldest son of Marvin Todd and Barbara Mae Haines. He went home to be with the Lord and was preceded in passing by his parents and first grandson, Fredrick Michael Cox, III.
Gary was a talented drummer and singer for many years. He played local clubs all around the Santa Cruz and later around the Monterey Peninsula with “The Royals”. He was a heavy truck mechanic and 4X4 specialist prior to moving to the Carmel Valley/Cachagua area. He drove the school bus for the Carmel Unified School District on the Cachagua route for 7 years. Gary also drove tour coach for Pacific Monarch in Marina, CA and has been retired since 2002. He was an active prospector and had recently joined GPAA and the LDMA. He and his wife were avid RVer’s traveling Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Northern California until he became ill. Gary was a dedicated firefighter for the Cachagua Volunteer Fire Department from 1987 to 2001. Gary was a loving neighbor of the Cachagua/Prince’s Camp community who always unselfishly volunteered a helping hand or a kind word and a good belly laugh. He will be loved and missed by all who knew him.
Gary is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Carolyn Todd and three children: two daughters, Lisa Bailey of San Juan Bautista, CA and Laurie (Robbie) Deighton of Arroyo Seco, CA and his son, Gary Ray (Stacey) Todd of Carmel Valley, CA; three sisters, Kimberly (Ray) Susong of Honey Grove, TX, Tamara Richards of Oswego, NY and Annette Martinez of Utah; two brothers, Richard (Carole) Todd of Utah and Michael Haines of Carmel Valley, CA; five granddaughters, Christina Cox, Carol Ann Scherman, Stephanie Bailey, Samantha Bailey and Sheryl Bailey; two grandsons, Gary Michael Todd and Wyatt Dale Todd; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the doctors and nurses as well as N.A.’s of Terrace West at C.H.O.M.P, the cancer infusion center and radiation oncology departments for all their caring support and encouragement; you folks rock! To his granddaughter and RN, Carol Ann, a big heartfelt thank you- Grandpa loves you; we know it wasn’t easy.
At the family’s request, a private celebration of life and the scattering of Gary’s ashes will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Cancer Society, 945 S. Main Street, Suite 201, Salinas, CA 93901.
