Jacob (Jack) died peacefully at his home in Carmel. He was born and raised in New Jersey. He attended UCLA, UC Berkeley and Scripps Institute of Oceanography, earning degrees in Civil Engineering and Oceanography. He served in World War II as a meteorologist in Alaska. He moved to Carmel in 1952 and taught Oceanography at the Naval Postgraduate School for 32 years.
Jack was an avid tennis and table tennis player until the year before his death. He loved the beach and ran there nearly every day for many years. He enjoyed traveling, had friends in many countries, and spoke several languages. He had a great sense of humor and made puns at every opportunity. He loved all kinds of music, especially jazz. He worked actively for many environmental causes and was primarily concerned with climate change.
Jack’s first wife, Janet, passed away in 1952. He remarried in 1953 and lost his second wife, Else, in 2003. He is survived by a son, Jeffrey Quam-Wickham, a daughter, Wendelyn Wickham, a step-daughter, Rachel Carpenter, two granddaughters, Claire and Rosalia Quam-Wickham, and a step-grandson, Tay Carpenter. We all feel that our lives were enriched by Jack. A memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate a gift in Jack’s memory to an environmental organization of your choice.
