A husband, father grandfather and jazz musician - Jimmy Ryan was a deeply devoted Christian whose generous spirit will be missed by many. Jimmy was born and raised in Los Angeles, California with his two beloved little sisters, Midge and Bonnie. At age 13, Jimmy's cousin introduced him to Jazz, for which his passion would never fade. He began playing drums at 18, and played with many great musicians in the Los Angeles, Monterey and San Francisco scenes.
After moving to San Francisco in the sixties, Jimmy and his first wife Pat together raised a family of six children; Jenny, Sharon Rose, Joel, Paul, Emily and Matthew, each of whom brought great joy and love into his life. On May 8, 1970, Jimmy had a life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ and invited Him into his heart. During this period, Jimmy worked for Equitable Life Assurance Company, leading his company in growth for many years and winning multiple awards for his work until he retired in 1997.
Bird and Beckett, a little bookstore in San Francisco, set the stage for two wonderful occurrences in his life; a return to playing jazz drums after a nearly 30-year hiatus and meeting his wife, Rory. he and Rory found great happiness for twelve wonderful years. During this time, they traveled the world, served their faith through Kairos Ministry and their church and made memories with their nine children and seven grandchildren. In recent years, Jimmy and Rory enjoyed life in a great community in beautiful Monterey and made many dear friends through Mayflower Church.
Outspoken, independent and, at times, politically incorrect; Jimmy fiercely stood by his convictions and spent much time learning about issues that mattered to him. Jimmy had a zest for life and a great sense of fun. It is in this spirit that we celebrate his life and remember him.
