Carmel - Bud Barker, age 90, passed away peacefully after an ongoing struggle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Janet, three daughters, five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Less than two weeks after Pearl Harbor, Bud was commissioned an Ensign at the U.S. Naval Academy, following family tradition to serve as a Naval officer. Within five months, he found himself on the heavy cruiser USS Vincennes. In early June of '42, the Vincennes fought for the survival of Midway Island. It was near Guadalcanal, two months later, that the ship was sunk in the First Battle of Savo Island, leaving Bud and the other survivors of the 1200-man crew in the water to await a long-delayed rescue.
Bud subsequently played an instrumental role in developing atomic power plants for the Navy's Nuclear Submarine Program. He served on the staff of the famously exacting Admiral Hyman Rickover and helped to build a replica of the power plant of what would become the Nautilus submarine. After twenty-two years in the Navy, Bud retired and worked for Lockheed on numerous classified programs. He moved to the Carmel area in 1984.
Bud was known for his generosity of spirit, his playful nature, his dedication to church and community service, antique furniture restoration, and model railroading. His passion was for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church on Saturday, August 6th at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to All Saints' Episcopal Day School, 8060 Carmel Valley Rd., Carmel, 93923. Arrangements are under the direction of The Paul Mortuary.
