Margery was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Clifford and Helen Sonneman on June 7, 1926. She enjoyed a full life dedicated to her family and to helping others throughout both her personal and professional life.
She graduated from Withrow High School in Cincinnati and went on to study at both Ohio Wesleyan University and the University of Southern California, where she was a member of the Chi-Omega sorority. In 1946 she married the love of her life, Richard Young, and they began their 65-year marriage together. They eventually moved to the west coast and settled in Palo Alto. Margery served as a parent volunteer for her daughters in countless capacities, and in support of her husband’s work as an Engineer and his continued participation in the Naval Reserve. During this time Margery also returned to school and received an AA degree in medical assisting from Foothill College. She worked as a medical assistant for a doctor in private practice prior to retiring in 1987.
Margery and her husband retired to Pebble Beach in 1987. She volunteered at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP) and recently became involved in supporting the Central Coast Veteran’s Cemetery Foundation. Throughout retirement, she and Richard enjoyed many travel adventures. They toured Hong Kong and China and cruised to Alaska, Europe, South America, and the Panama Canal. Margery was always willing to help a friend or neighbor and was often found offering her support to others around her. She was an avid reader and a lover of sports, particularly baseball. Margery always hosted her family for holidays and birthdays, and was a giving and thoughtful wife, Mother and Grandmother. She was, in the fullest and best sense, a homemaker. Home was where ever she was. Her family will always be grateful for her humor, wit, and tenacity.
Margery is survived by her daughters, Susan and Christine, Susan’s husband Tony Day, and her Grandchildren, Alison Day, Daniel Clifford, and Matthew Clifford. Her sister, Jeanne Newton of Franklin, Tennessee also survives her, as do many nieces and nephews.
Margery’s family would like to express their deep gratitude for the excellent care given her by Dr. Richard King, Dr. Nancy Rubin, the staff at Pacific Cancer Care, and the staff at CHOMP.
In accordance with her wishes, no services will be conducted at this time. The family would appreciate any donations in her name being directed to the Central Coast Veterans Cemetery Foundation, P.O. Box 849, Marina, CA 93933.
