Mary Arnn, a native of Eugene, Oregon, and fifty-eight-year Monterey Peninsula resident, passed away at Community Hospital on May 23, 2015. Mary received her B.A. degree in American Literature from Reed College in 1943. She found a job after graduation supporting the war effort by working as a cowgirl on the Seven Ranch in New Mexico. After marrying John Oliver Arnn in 1946, she lived in many different places, including Japan, as her husband’s army career dictated. She lived in Carmel, California, after her husband’s death in Vietnam in 1965. Mary was active in the World Affairs Council, the United Nations, the Carmel Foundation, Amnesty International, and the American Civil Liberties Union. She was a charter member of the Carmel Area Coalition, a group whose actions led to the scenic preservation of the agricultural land at the mouth of the Carmel Valley. Mary is survived by her children, James Arnn of Monterey and Barbara Arnn (Walter Nickerson Hill) of Port Townsend, Washington, and her step-grandsons, Andrew D. Hill and Andrew Arnn. A memorial gathering will be held in the near future. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to either the Arnn Memorial Scholarship Fund at Northern Arizona University, P.O. Box 4094, Flagstaff, AZ 86011 (Checks should be made payable to “NAU Foundation” and should refer to fund #7007 or Arnn Memorial Scholarship), or to the World Affairs Council, 2200 Alaskan Way, Suite 450, Seattle, WA 98121.
