Monterey ~ Patrina C. Askew, a life-long resident of Monterey, passed away at her home on September 29. After graduating from Monterey High School in 1941, she worked as a telephone operator for Pacific Bell during World War II. Patrina was also a newspaper delivery person for the Monterey Herald for 22 years. Her route was the Carmel Highlands and she became friends with all her customers.
Patrina was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Monterey where she was in charge of the children’s nursery for 20 years. She was also a member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Seaside for many years. Patrina was known as a great cook and an excellent seamstress, quilter and knitter.
Patrina was the “rock” of her family for whom she provided unconditional love. Her greatest joy was being surrounded by them and unselfishly helping them in any way they needed. Patrina is survived by her husband of 69 years, Clayton; her children, Mark (Judy) of Monterey, Weston of Mesa AZ and Alina (Chuck) Hurd of Monterey; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Rose Marie Carper, and her granddaughter, Katrina Hurd.
