September 7, 1939 – February 11, 2025
Robert Charles Palmer, born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to Robert Guy Palmer and Alverna Miller, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2025, surrounded by dear friends.
From his earliest days, Robert exhibited an insatiable curiosity and a deep love for the arts. Growing up in Pennsylvania, he spent countless hours with his father at a small-town cinema—a setting that sparked his lifelong passion for film, literature, music, and theater. Friends would later fondly describe him as a savant with an encyclopedic knowledge of these subjects, and as the sweetest soul who brightened every conversation with his thoughtful insights.
After high school, Robert served honorably in the US Navy from 1962 to 1964; his military service kindled his interest in foreign travel and cultures. Robert, especially fond of Japan, Ireland, and Scandinavia, enjoyed studying their respective literary traditions.
Seeking new adventures after spending time traveling the world on his own, Robert journeyed to California. In downtown Carmel, he met Rita Nelson in a quaint card shop—a meeting that would blossom into a 30-year partnership filled with love and shared adventures. Together, they nurtured a compassionate tradition of feeding and sheltering stray cats in Carmel, a tradition Robert would continue well beyond Rita’s passing in 2010.
Embracing the California lifestyle, Robert built a career as a third-generation house painter on the Monterey Peninsula. Beyond his work, he was a dedicated volunteer with Meals on Wheels. In 2016, Robert moved to his humble Pebble Beach home, affectionately known as “Hermitsville,” where he rented a room from his dear friend Lisa Ledin.
Robert delighted in the simple pleasures of life—a satisfying sandwich or burger, wholesome meals from his favorite local spots, peaceful walks, and long afternoons spent with his circle of friends—far too numerous to list—at PG Bookworks and the coffee shop, where he was known for enjoying sunny days, sharing stories, and even handing out candies.
Robert is survived by his cousin, John “Jack” Palmer, his nephew, Warren Algood, and his cousin, David Palmer.
A memorial service to celebrate Robert’s life will be held on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at 3:00 PM at the Community Church of the Monterey Peninsula (4590 Carmel Valley Rd, Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA 93923). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Community Church of Monterey Peninsula or the Pacific Grove Library.
Robert’s life was marked by intellectual curiosity, unwavering kindness, and a passion for both the arts and the simple pleasures that enrich everyday life. His legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him, and his gentle spirit will be dearly missed.
