Teddy was born on October 1, 1991 to his parents Bruce and Ellen Malasky. He attended Bak Middle School of the Arts, Dreyfoos School of the Arts, and graduated from Interlochen Center for the Arts where he played trombone. Teddy continued to pursue his passion for trombone and music at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, where he studied with Michael Mulcahy of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He received his Bachelor of Music in 2014. Teddy’s passion for music continued through his trombone performance studies at New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts, where he received a Masters of Music in trombone performance and studied with Steven Lang of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Although he began as a trombone player, Teddy’s love of music blossomed as a conductor at the front of ensembles, which led him to receive a Masters of Music in wind ensemble conducting from New England Conservatory in 2017 where he studied with Charles Peltz and William Drury. Even after Teddy’s diagnosis, he persevered in the face of hardship and started a doctoral degree program in wind ensemble conducting at Northwestern University. He later transferred to New England Conservatory to continue his doctoral program to be back in Boston.
Although Teddy was not given the time to finish his doctoral studies, his drive, passion, work ethic, and unwavering love of music have inspired others’ success in their lines of work, and would no doubt have led him to his own success.
Teddy’s studies in music also led him to perform as a trombonist at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, Music Academy of the West, and for three seasons at The Aspen Music Festival. Teddy was also a student at The Alessi Seminar in Quebec, CA, where he studied with Joseph Alessi of the New York Philharmonic. Teddy played as a trombonist in the Bangor Symphony Orchestra in Bangor, Maine for two seasons, and served as the principal trombonist for his second season. Following his passion for conducting, Teddy participated in a conducting workshop where he guest conducted The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in 2017.
Teddy loved his family, his friends, and anyone with a good sense of humor. Teddy always lit up the room he was in and excelled at making those around him smile.
Teddy was predeceased by his grandfather, Donald Malasky. Teddy is survived by his father, Bruce, mother, Ellen, and brother, Hunter Malasky, grandparents Marilyn and Lewis Steingesser, grandmother Ilene Malasky Frankle, and his loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
