Dr Rulin grew up in Youngstown, Ohio and attended Ohio State University and Chicago Medical School. He spent his early professional and family life in the Squirrel Hill community of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and moved to Florida in retirement. He was the dedicated and caring husband of Steffi Goldmann Rulin z”l for 54 years.
Marvin was the devoted father of four children Renee B Rulin, Elliott G (Paula) Rulin, Edye L Rulin z”l and Judy Rulin Mahan (Chuck z”l) and the beloved Papa to four grandchildren – Matt Mahan, Adam (Hannah) Valen, Josh Najjar-Rulin, Lou Najar-Rulin and great grandson Emerson DeAlencar.
In retirement, Marvin fully embraced senior living at the Devonshire in Palm Beach Gardens for many years with his partner Estelle Stockman z”l.
Dr Rulin enjoyed a long, distinguished and fulfilling career as an obstetrician-gynecologist. After many years in private practice, delivering countless babies during many sleepless nights, he found a second calling in academic medicine, with a special passion for teaching and mentoring medical students. He was particularly proud of his “Golden Apple” awards from graduating medical student classes. After serving as Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Pittsburgh, he continued to focus on teaching medical students, creating a community-based primary care teaching program, and receiving a dean’s award for physician education. Dr Rulin authored more than twenty articles in peer-reviewed medical journals.
In addition to his academic work, Dr. Rulin also served as an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the National Board of Medical Examiners.
Dr Rulin served two years as a Captain in the US Air Force from 1954 to 1956.
Outside of his professional life, Marvin was an avid golfer, having begun playing on his high school team. In retirement, he took up bridge and proudly achieved the rank of Grand Life Master. He continued to play a mean game of duplicate bridge until several weeks before his death.
Marvin was a long-time member of Temple Sinai and was deeply committed to his community. His service included the Board of the Pittsburgh Hebrew Free Loan Society, the Ethics Committee at the Magee-Women’s Hospital, Temple Sinai Brotherhood, and the Pittsburgh Free Clinic.
A private burial will be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
