Surrounded by the love of his family, Michael S. Kay, 61, of Wellington, FL passed away on March 23, 2025. Michael fought for 12 years with metastatic thyroid cancer and his family is comforted knowing he is no longer suffering. Michael did not allow his cancer journey to define him or slow him down. Instead, he kept himself informed and knowledgeable of the treatment options available which ultimately prolonged his life for many years. His doctors always called him their miracle patient.
Michael was born on March 5, 1964 to Robert Eli Kay and Sharon Fettner in White Stone, Queens, NY. Growing up in Roslyn, NY, Michael participated in cross-country, wrestling and helped his high school’s theater team by building stage sets. Michael’s evident passion for constructing and creating carried over into his lifelong career as an Insurance Restoration Contractor.
Michael’s priority was family and he was always willing to help those who needed him. If you asked Michael for his opinion, you could guarantee he would spend the next few days doing ample research to provide multiple suggestions accompanied by a detailed pros and cons list. He was a problem solver but even more so he was a teacher. Michael believed in empowering those around him and equipping them with the tools and knowledge needed to make the best decision for themselves. When Michael was no longer able to work, he found his creative outlet in building a small cabin in Arcadia, FL which quickly became his place of peace (“tree therapy”) and his home away from home. Belle, his 5 year old rescue dog became his companion and joined in on many of his visits to the Arcadia property. Michael enjoyed attending Miami Dolphin games and was a season ticket holder for many years.
Michael is survived by his wife of 11 years, Susy Kay; children, Mark Kay, Maria Thornal (Chris), Christopher Matilszki (Rebecca), Jess Miller and Averley Rilea-Kay; grandchildren, Jack Thornal and MiaRose Matilszki. He is also survived by his mother, Sharon Chandler and sisters, Rhonda Kay and Tara Kay.
A memorial service will be held at IJ Morris Star of David on Thursday, March 27th at 9:30 AM with Rabbi Anthony Fratello. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge in Tampa, Florida, a program providing free housing to cancer patients undergoing treatment.
