Our Savior Jesus Christ destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel. Let us remember with thanksgiving what God has done through His servant Benny Paul Mitschke. Benny was given life by his creator and was born on June 19, 1938, the child of Harry and Edna Mitschke. He was baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit on June 26, 1938 at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Winchester, Texas. He was also confirmed in the Christian faith at St. Paul Lutheran, Serbin, Texas on March 29, 1953 and regularly received the life-giving body and blood of Jesus.
On June 27, 1959, he received the gift of a beloved companion in his wife, Lillian Kasper. They were blessed with the gift of children: Ken, Janet and Paul. God also blessed Benny with many special people as he served God in vocations at home, church, work, and in the community.
Benny grew up on a farm where he worked hard to take care of animals and plants. He especially enjoyed his cows and tractors.
He learned many skills: machine work, auto paint and body, pipefitting, plant operations, drafting, instrumentation technician, analyzer technician, property management, bee keeping, small engine repair, collecting clocks, playing dominoes.
Benny went to college while working full time and raising a family. He loved his family and worked hard to provide for them.
Benny was a long-time member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Pasadena, Texas, where he attended and served as the lead or member of the Grounds Committee, Evangelism Board, Prayer Ministry, Food Ministry and served as Recording Secretary, Youth Counselor, Treasurer, and Elder. At Gloria Dei, Houston, he served weekly as a Roustabout until illness limited his participation.
While serving the Lord at church, no position was too great or small for Benny. He replaced fluorescent tubes and air filters and served as an elder. He mowed the church lawn and delivered food to people in need. He helped with odd jobs and visited shut-ins, sharing God’s Word and prayer with them. He served as a leader with the Lutheran Layman’s League (now Lutheran Hour Ministries) both locally and statewide. Benny was generous in giving to the Lord at his home church, Lutheran organizations and missions.
In all matters of work, faith and family, Benny was respected for his kindness, his faithfulness, and his smile.
Finally, on May 10, 2024, at the age of 85 years and 326 days, Benny was blessed by God with a peaceful death and was welcomed home in paradise, in the nearer presence of Jesus, while his body rests and awaits the resurrection of the dead. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Young, and grandson, Brandon Mitschke. He is survived by his best friend and wife of 64 years and 318 days, Lillian, his son Ken and wife Patti, and grandsons William and Andrew and wife Sara, and by his son-in-law, David and grandsons, Michael and Zachary, and by his son Paul Mitschke and grandson, Joshua, along with his two brothers, Leonard Mitschke and wife Dorthy, and David Mitschke.
The Lord gives and the Lord takes away; blessed be the name of the Lord. We give thanks to God our Father through Jesus Christ, our Lord, for our brother Benny Paul Mitschke.
