Carrie McKenzie Russell was born on September 24, 1938 to Inita Dixon (Mother) and Rommie McKenzie (Father) in Mobile, Alabama. She was the third oldest of four children. Carrie moved from Moss Point, Mississippi to Laporte in 1963 and has been a resident ever since. Carrie's work was always about helping others. She worked as a housekeeper for the Glass family for over 40 years, and briefly for the local Minimax Grocery Store and La Porte ISD.
She was a faithful member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and she loved to coordinate and cook for church events, family and friends. She loved to shop, especially for a deal and bargain! You could catch her at the thrift store or department store. Carrie was a pillar of the community and was lovingly referred to by family and friends as “Punkin”. In her life she touched many with her straightforward charm and generous heart. She will be greatly missed.
Carrie was preceded in death by her mother, Inita Dixon and Father Rommie McKenzie and her sisters, Danny Hall, Shirley McKenzie, Katie May McKenzie, and daughter, Janice McKenzie Lawrence. Also, two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Carrie leaves to celebrate her life and cherish precious memories, her husband Andrew Russell, her sons Edward and Eric, daughters Cassandra Kilgore (William), Donna McCovery and youngest son, Paul McCovery (Shaunte).
Carrie has three sisters, Lula Joseph, Pastor Turner and Annie Ruth. She has 20 grandkids and 31 great-grand kids and a host of nieces, nephews, and acquaintances.
