David was born September 20, 1949 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois to John Fredrick and Mary Ethel Kitch. The family moved to Pasadena, Texas in 1954. David loved jazz and big band music, and played the trombone in a jazz band. He was very athletic and a good student. David graduated from Sam Rayburn high school in 1968. In 1967, David traveled to Guatemala where he did mission work for four months. While there, he developed a passion for helping others which lead him to become a Pasadena volunteer firefighter in 1972. David remained with the department for 25 years and was a district chief for a time. He met the love of his life, Mary Margaret Garza in 1966 while working as a medistat at Southmore Hospital, where she was also employed as a nurse. They married December 20, 1968, and resided in Pasadena, Texas for all of their time together. David began working for Ellington Airforce Base as a paramedic in 1976. He was a member of the Ellington Fire Dept. from 1987 to 1999, becoming an assistant chief during this time. He remained with Ellington, working as a civil servant until his retirement in 2013. David and Maggie welcomed a daughter, Misty, in 1974 and a son, David Jr., in 1976. David set about teaching them an appreciation for the outdoors by taking them camping and fishing regularly. His children remember him as a prankster who loved to laugh and have fun, a hard worker, and a man dedicated to his job and helping others in their time of need. He was a father who supported and encouraged his children to play sports or music and always pursue their goals, whatever they may be. David was a proud grandfather whose grandchildren lovingly called, “Grumpy”.
David was a kind, generous man, who loved to tell stories. He was very patriotic, and loved to teach others anything he knew. He will be deeply missed by his family, large extended family, fellow fire fighters, and friends.
