Dorothy Elizabeth West Chambers went home to be with The LORD on Monday, November 24, 2025, at the age of 94. She was born on March 16, 1931, in Canton, North Carolina to Winton Garrett and Jessie Arlene Smathers West. She grew up at the family home in the Beaverdam community along with her brothers Joseph and John West. On January 28, 1945, Dorothy received Jesus Christ as her Savior and Lord and was received into membership in the Beaverdam Methodist Church. With two brothers serving in the military during World War II and upon the death of her mother in January,1948, Dorothy became the only woman in the West home.
Following her graduation from Canton High School on May 31,1950 as a proud Canton Black Bear, she moved to Asheville, North Carolina to study nursing. However, big city life did not suit Dorothy, so she returned to her father and their home in Beaverdam.
She soon met and married the love of her life, James Medford Chambers on July 30, 1951. Seeking permanent employment and greater opportunities, they moved to Pasadena, Texas where James began his career at the Champion Paper Mill in October 1952, where he worked for 34 ½ years.
Dorothy was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, caring for all who came into their home. She was an excellent cook, gifted seamstress, avid gardener, and often enjoyed coffee and conversations with other neighborhood ladies. Together, James and Dorothy raised five sons and one daughter during the Pasadena years.
In 1986, James retired from the mill and in 1987 they moved to Carlisle, Texas on Lake Livingston, where they enjoyed 34 years of gardening, fishing, shopping for groceries with triple coupons, raising their boxer dogs (Brutus, Bulger and Rocky) and living in the East Texas woods.
Dorothy enjoyed tending her flowers, walking with neighbors, family gatherings, and watching the East Texas wildlife. James and Dorothy enjoyed frequent trips to Pasadena, Deer Park and La Porte to visit their children and grandchildren and annual trips to both Western North Carolina, and Miami, Florida to visit extended family. In December 2022, they returned to Pasadena to be closer to their children.
Dorothy is survived by their sons Joseph Chambers and Angela, Gary Chambers and Jodi, James W. Chambers and Vanessa Davis, Robert Chambers and Teresa, and daughter Rene’ Fleming and Steven. Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband James, their son, John Earl Chambers, and their grandson, Christopher Alan Chambers.
James and Dorothy’s grandchildren are Jerrod Chambers, Jason Chambers, Brandon Chambers and Lauren, Christina Watson, Cory Wilson and Hanna, Peyton Petry, Morgan Chambers and Andy Towne, Hannah Chambers Sanchez and Jesse, and Samuel Chambers, along with numerous great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express our deepest appreciation to the caring and committed staff at both the Reserve at Pasadena Assisted Living Community and Bristol Hospice for their love and care for Mrs. Chambers.
A service to remember and celebrate Dorothy’s life will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at Grandview Funeral Home with visitation at 10:00 am and service at 11:00 am. Following the service, Dorothy will be laid to rest next to her husband James in the Grandview Cemetery. Dr. Charles Redmond of the First Baptist Church Pasadena will be officiating the service. Pallbearers are Jerrod Chambers, Jason Chambers, Brandon Chambers, Samuel Chambers, Corey Wilson, Tyler Wilson, and Jesse Sanchez.
