Evelyn Gober Hicks, 85, of Point Blank, TX, made Heaven a little sweeter on Saturday, August 27 as she entered those pearly gates. She was born September 22, 1925 in Birmingham, Alabama to Thaddeus Earl Etheredge and Townie Edna (Boozer) Etheredge. She moved to Pasadena, Texas in 1956 and resided there until 1985. In 1985, Evelyn moved to the lake house that her husband and sons built in Point Blank, TX and lived there until 2008.
Evelyn grew up during the Great Depression in the hills of Alabama. Some of her earliest memories include listening to her father whistle and sing as he walked up the hill to their house each evening and how he would give her the bottom crust of the cornbread that was made for dinner. Her father was a great man of faith and his love for the Lord passed on to her. She was a powerful prayer warrior, loving mother, and dedicated wife who was not afraid to “tell it like it is” to anyone. Her children can remember many times when Evelyn thought her husband, Carl, was being a “stupid man” and she was not afraid to tell him so. Even though her first husband was not a Christian till his last few months of life, Evelyn consistently took her children to church and taught them the Word of God. She was very active in her church, teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, visiting those sick in the hospital, a Missionette leader and witness to her friends and family. Many times, when her children became ill, they would not need to go to the doctor. Evelyn would pray for them and they would be healed of their illness. After the passing of her second husband, Evelyn would joke that she didn’t need to marry again because she already had three boyfriends, “God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.” Evelyn had activities that she loved, and she would teach any who were willing to participate in them with her. Grandchildren coming to stay with her during the summer would learn how to fish, cook, and even crochet during their few weeks at Memaw’s house. Evelyn would also write poems and songs that God gave her for others. To her childhood friends she was known as “Emmer;” her family, “Evelyn;” her children, “Momma;” her grand children, “Memaw;” and to Jesus “My good and faithful servant.”
She is preceded in death by her parents, Thaddeus and Townie Etheredge, husband of 39 years, Carl F. Gober, second husband, Brooks Hicks, son, Leon Gober, granddaughter, Kasey Deerdoff, great grandson, Alex Moravits, and her eight siblings.
