All those who knew Jim described him as one of the kindest people you would ever meet. He always had the sweetest, most welcoming greeting when you saw him, followed by a warm hug, and it would always be followed by a kind word or compliment. He made the best coffee, and made sure there was always plenty when anyone would visit. He wanted to be sure everyone felt welcomed and important.
He grew up playing basketball and gained his love of the sport from his father Ned, who was an amazing basketball coach for Pasadena High school, and later the University of Houston, where Jim also played. For most of his life, Jim loved to play golf. He would often play with his brother Bill, and if he wasn't actually playing it, he was keeping up with all the latest professional golf stats, by watching it on TV.
In 1992, he met the love of his life, Norma, and he stole her heart when he asked her, "Would you like to dance this slow one?" They danced that day, and the rest was history. The family always watched with a smile when they'd dance throughout the years, and were especially impressed at how well they did “the whip.” Together they shared 30 years of beautiful life together, and he doted on her, always expressing how beautiful and wonderful she was, and they were inseparable.
He had a yard at their home, that was the envy of the neighborhood, and he won Yard of the Month, not even realizing he'd been entered. Keeping that yard in such beautiful condition, was one of his favorite hobbies, and you could see when you looked at it, what care he placed into every detail. He also took such incredible care of his vehicles, one of which was his beloved Trans AM, which he liked to take to car shows, or drive around town. He took pride in his many beautiful trucks, over the years, and all of his vehicles caught attention, wherever he took them. He even drove his beautiful, Mrs. Pasadena Senior down the street in a parade, in his Trans Am, while onlookers stared in amazement.
Words cannot express how much we are going to miss him, but we are all so thankful for the many wonderful years he blessed all of our lives with his love and kindness.
He is preceded in death by his father Ned, mother Margie Thompson, and his son Benny Thompson, and is survived by his loving wife, Norma Thompson. He also leaves to cherish his memories, brother Bill Thompson, sister Elaine Haun, his children, Cheryl Thompson, and husband Jorge, Tommy Thompson, Lisa Velasquez and husband Roy, Gyla Wilborn, Rhonda Dittrich and husband, Karl, as well as his 14 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren who loved him dearly.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.grandviewfunerals.com for the Thompson family.
