There are lives that fill a room, and then there are lives like Joe Dutton’s. The kind of life that, when told in full, sounds like the story of several different men. A Recon Marine. A Senior Staff Engineer. A pilot. A motorcyclist. A pianist. A golfer. A mayor. A deacon and a man of deep faith. And yet it was all one man, living one extraordinary life with no regrets.
Born on Tuesday, January 21, 1947, he passed from this world on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, leaving behind a legacy built not just on what he accomplished, but on who he was. A man who led with steady strength, gave generously of himself, and never once stopped reaching for the next challenge.
He answered his country’s call as a United States Marine, serving in Vietnam from June 1967 to July 1968 as a member of Force Recon, one of the most elite and demanding roles the Marine Corps has to offer. It was not a distinction he wore loudly, but it was one that spoke volumes about the kind of man he was. Once a Marine, always a Marine, and he carried that identity with quiet pride every day of his life.
After returning home, he found both his footing and his calling at ExxonMobil’s refinery in Baytown, Texas, where he spent 32 remarkable years and built lifelong friendships. He began his career as an instrument technician and, through hard work and an exceptional mind for engineering, rose to Senior Staff Engineer, leading large-scale projects and earning the respect of everyone around him. It was a career that mirrored his passion for hard work and his refusal to stop short of excellence.
The man his family knew was so much more than his résumé. He earned his pilot’s license and took to the skies whenever he could. He flew planes and even jumped out of them. He owned several Harley-Davidson motorcycles and led multiple cross-country trips, earning the title of Trail Boss. He took up the piano and found real joy in mastering new songs. Motorcycles and planes were fun, but his real passion was golf. He spent years working to shave strokes off his handicap, a pursuit that often put his patience and competitive spirit on full display. All the while, he gave back to his community by serving as the city’s mayor for two terms.
Above all this was his steadfast faith in God. He served his church as a deacon and took on multiple service roles that put his faith into action at every turn. Among his favorites were his hospital visits, where he spent time with those who needed support most.
He is survived by his wife, Tracy Dutton; his two sons, Matt Dutton, Chance Dutton and his wife Dina, his daughter Adrianne Tropilo and her husband John; along with his six grandchildren Hannah and Matthew Dutton, Emma and Bella Tropilo, and Mason and Avery Dutton; as well as his brother David Dutton. He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Joyce Dutton and sister Judy Dutton Hill.
He was a Marine. A husband, a father, an engineer, a mayor, a pilot, a rider, a musician, and a man of God. He was one of a kind, and he will be deeply missed.
