John Gibbs Haney passed away on December 16, 2020 in Houston, Texas. John was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on May 1, 1943 to John Martin Haney and Eileen Anthaume Haney Rannals. The family moved to Pasadena, Texas in 1946 and John graduated from Pasadena High School in 1961.
After watching the conflict grow in Vietnam and knowing the draft was in his future, John volunteered for the Marine Corps in 1964. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for bravery in battle, 24 August 1966. After serving in the Marine Corps John returned to the Houston area and began his career as a computer programmer in the geophysical industry. During his retirement years John enjoyed playing bridge with his many friends at Tracy Gee Community Center.
John Gibbs was blessed with a unique personality and photographic memory and could name every actor from just about any movie or TV shown he had seen. He loved visiting with people from all walks of life to discuss history, literature, current events, travel and food. He was a wealth of knowledge on many subjects, but the most popular was unquestionably the correct way to make a roux and a big pot of gumbo, and Mancuso’s Lake Charles Hot Tamales, which so many friends and family were lucky to enjoy over the years.
John Gibbs was preceded in death by his mother, father and younger brother James Martin Haney. He is survived by his loving sister Alice Haney Sirois, her husband Jim Sirois, their children John L. Sirois and his wife Tracy, Jeannette Sirois Muecke and her husband Brian, and their children Maxwell, Peyton and Lila, and cousins Sally PIcheloup and Judson McCann and wife Liz of Lake Charles, LA.
