

Joy Lavaughn Chaffin (nee Roe), 86, of Deer Park, TX, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2023 She was born on January 7, 1937, in the city of Mexia, in Limestone County, TX. Joy was a caring, kind, and yet fiercely strong-willed woman who lived her life on her terms while always loving her family dearly.
Joy is survived by her son, William P (Bill) Chaffin, Jr; her daughter, Sheryl Johnson and husband Jerry; her daughter, Dawn Gladden and husband John; two grandsons, William W (B.J.) Johnson and Bradley P Johnson; four granddaughters, Rachel Johnson, Lisa, Krystal, and Sara Gladden; and five great-grandchildren, Haylee, Hayden, Kaylee, Ava, and Gage.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, William P. Chaffin; her mother, Josie Mae Roe; her father, Claude Roe; her sisters, Marie Wadle and Melba Dunaway; and her brothers, Maurice, Kenneth, and Melvin.
Joy graduated from Pasadena High School and went on to study at the prestigious Lillie Jolly School of Nursing earning a bachelor’s degree in Nursing. Later, she earned a Masters of Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing (RNC-NIC®) from UTMB in Galveston, Tx. She had an illustrious career in nursing serving all of her profession in the Pasadena area in the labor and delivery; post partum and ultimately Neonatal unit, dedicating 38 years in the service to others before retiring in 2005.
In September 1958 she wed the love of her life William (Bill) Chaffin; they started a family and eventually built a house and settled in Deer Park in 1969 where she remained.
Joy worshipped at the Second Baptist Church of LaPorte where she was a faithful member of the church.
In her free time, Joy loved to travel and explore the world. From Paris to Budapest; Edinburgh to Rome and everywhere in between: she cherished the experiences and memories made during her adventures. When at home she loved spending time with her doggies and “grand doggies;” her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
A viewing will be held at Grand View Funeral Home, located at 8501 Spencer Hwy, Pasadena, TX 77505, on August 24, 2023, from 5 pm to 8 pm. Graveside service will take place on Friday at 10:30 am at the adjacent Grand View Cemetery
The memorial service will be held at Second Baptist Church LaPorte, located at 9025 Carlow Ln, LaPorte, TX 77571, on Saturday, August 26, at 10:00 am.
Joy will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Joy always looked for the best in everyone, and was compassionate to anyone in need she came across.
We have comfort in the knowledge that she is with Jesus and her loved ones gone before her, and most of all reunited with her beloved husband.
The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who loved mom and all of the caregivers and hospice angels; who lovingly took care of mom during her final days.
