Julia "Judy" Elsberry, 79, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 1, 2015, surrounded by loved ones in her home in La Porte. Judy was born on September 8, 1936 in Bangor, Maine to Eugene Torrey and Lida Keezer Harlow. Judy was a dedicated wife of 35 years to Calvin "Buddy" Elsberry. Beloved mother of daughters Holly Cantu, Darby Rule, Julie Rainey, and Catherine Alexander; and son, David Smith. Cherished by eight grandchildren, Darcy, Ashley, Krista, Kayla, Collin, Jessica, Bobby, and Jennifer; and four great-grandchildren, Julia, Abigail, Maya, and Ava. And a treasured sister to Serena Pomroy. She is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Bertha Murch, Joan Torrey, and Avis Torrey; and grandson, Jeremy.
Although Judy was born and raised in the state of Maine, she moved to the Houston area as a teenager, where she remained and grew her family. As a young woman, she aspired to be a writer, which evolved into her love of reading mystery novels in her later years. Judy prided herself on keeping up with world and political news and loved to discuss current events and issues with anyone knowledgeable. Judy also enjoyed listening to old honky-tonk country music, and was a fan of Merle Haggard. She served tables at Barry's Burger Barn in Pasadena for many years and is remembered for her friendly service and warm smile. At home, she was always in the kitchen preparing meals for family and friends, and kept her home open and welcoming to all. She was devoted to her family and her selflessness and strength remains an inspiration to all that knew her.
