Roy Bertis Large, age 90, went on Eternal Patrol November 15, 2022. He was born to Howard Large and Elinor Large in Abilene, Texas. During WWII the family lived in the little trailer park behind where Howard's Hardware stood. His father worked on the ships in the shipyards. He had the Post and Chronicle paper routes between the bayou on old highway 146 and Shoreacres. He placed every paper behind the screen door. In 1963 he and his wife moved into Seifert Trailer Park. He went to work for his uncle, Tom Brown, as an electrician, at Bayshore Electric. As the company grew and changed Harold Pfeiffer became the president and the name changed a couple of times. It is now known as Pfeiffer and Son Electric. At the company he was known as Buddy (his uncle didn't know him except by that name.) Some in La Porte also knew him as "the little electrician with the big dog" because he carried a Malamute dog with him on the truck. He worked 32 years for the company. Whether at work or at home, he had a knack for trouble shooting problems.
After he graduated from Abilene High School, he enrolled at Abilene Christian College for a short time. Then he joined the U.S. Navy for 4 years. He served on the U.S. submarine Diablo 479. When he returned, he quickly decided he did not want to work in the oil fields and he enrolled at Sam Houston University getting a BS in Agriculture followed by a MS in Agricultural Education.
After he retired he spent many, many hours finding the men who served aboard the Diablo. At the reunions he got the thanks from many of the men for finding them so they could attend the reunions.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lou Myrle Mann Large, sons Glenn Large and wife Michelle, Daniel Large and wife Wendy Large, grandsons Tyler Large, Brandon Large, and Brandon Swink and granddaughter, Abigail Large.
A Memorial Service will be held December 10, 2022 at 10a.m. at South Main Baptist Church in Pasadena, Texas.
