Born in Concrete, Texas on Thursday, March 31, 1938 to Rufus Joseph McElroy, Sr. and Irene Moore, R.J. is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Lorene; three daughters Debra Benfer, Donna Douglas and Rebecca McElroy; five grandchildren Caylor Matherne, Stefani Douglas, Lauren Douglas, Hunter Douglas and Elyse Benfer; two great-grandchildren Noah Mercer and Leila Mercer and his younger brother, Fabian McElroy.
R.J. was an easy going, happy-go-lucky man, who enjoyed nothing more than a good cup of coffee and a newspaper each morning, watching the birds and polishing his Ford in the afternoons, walks with his dogs in the evenings, and spending time with his family on the weekends. He loved football on Sundays, traveling the country with his beloved wife, and racing cars. He took pride in every job he ever had – beginning in 1956 as a “roughneck” at the oil fields in DeWitt County, until his retirement from Macy’s Trucking Department in 2009 - rarely missing a day for any reason, and always reminding his children and grandchildren of the importance of working hard. R.J. was the type of man that never met a stranger. He had a kind heart, infectious laugh, outstanding personality, and hilarious sense of humor. He was also quite the charmer; often winning contests around his home town and in high school as “who was the more handsome, R.J. or Elvis,” and even gave a few girls at his concert a thrill when they mistook him for the heartthrob. This was his favorite memory to share, given what a big fan he was of the King of Rock and Roll.
R.J. will be buried Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Grand View Memorial Park Garden of Christus, located at 8501 Spencer Highway Pasadena, TX 77505. A memorial will take place immediately following at 2110 Camdon Dr. Deer Park, TX 77536. All are welcome to attend and celebrate R.J.’s life. Flowers, donations and condolences may be offered at 2110 Camdon Dr. Deer Park, TX 77536.
