From an early age Elvia (Big Mama) proved to be a hard-working individual. She willingly left school at a tender age to help her parents with their work. That same loving and self-sacrificing spirit was carried over into her married life. Elvia met Guillermo Guzman in Hollis, Oklahoma at the age of 17 and they married the following year on December 13, 1953. Directly after marriage they moved to Pharr, TX and raised a family of 8 children. As a mother, she always made sacrifices for all of her children, “no matter the cost”. Whatever hardships the family faced, she worked hard to help her husband to figure out a solution. She proved to be the backbone of the family and Guillermo could always depend on her support. Elvia had some outstanding qualities which she passed on to her children, for example: to Diana she passed on her industriousness, to Jesse her ingenuity, to Santos her hard working nature, to Guillermo Jr. her wonderful sense of humor, to Sandra her selflessness, to Jacinto her large heartedness, to Carlos her love of children, and to Idalia her generosity; and to her daughters and some granddaughters her fiery disposition, and her 'sweet tooth' to all her children and grandchildren!!
Elvia is preceded in death by her loving husband, Guillermo Guzman; her parents, Blas and Santos Garcia; three brothers, Guadalupe, Jose, and Ernesto Garcia; and a grandson, Alexander Garza.
She is survived by her eight children who cherish her beautiful memory, Diana (Juan) Hernandez of Pharr, Texas, Jesus (Gloria) Guzman of Pharr, Texas, Santos (Linda) Guzman of San Juan, Texas, Guillermo (Paula) Guzman, Jr. of McAllen, Texas, Sandra (Greg) Cantu of Mount Dora, Florida, Jacinto (Melissa) Guzman of Pharr, Texas, Carlos (Victoria) Guzman of Greeley, Colorado, Idalia (Victor) Del Toro of Pharr, Texas; 26 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; a multitude of beloved family and friends.
“Mami’s influence and legacy will be felt for generations to come!! She'll be forever our 'Sleeping Beauty!!”
