Raul obtained his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice at Pan American University and, upon graduation, served his community for nearly two decades as Assistant Director of the Hidalgo County Adult Probation Center. After retirement, he devoted his time to a second career as an attendance officer for McAllen ISD.
Raul had a passion for football that began at a young age. A graduate of PSJA Bears High School, he made All-District as a two-way starter as offensive and defensive tackle. He later became a proud member of the Borregos Salvajes at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), where he played college football as an offensive tackle, and helped secure two National Championships. In 2016, he was inducted into the Salón de la Fama Nacional de Fútbol Americano en México (SAFANAL), also known as the National American Football Hall of Fame in Mexico, as an outstanding figure in college football. During his time at ITESM, he formed lifelong friendships that he endearingly referred to as the Borrego Brotherhood. His Borrego Brothers lovingly knew him as “El Mass”.
Raul was a man of quiet strength and deep generosity. While he often carried a calm and reserved presence, those who knew him well were fortunate to experience his warm sense of humor and quick wit. Beneath his tough exterior was a gentle soul who loved deeply and cared greatly for the people in his life.
He found joy in listening to Tejano music, spending time on the golf course or fishing, watching football, barbecuing for his family, and trying new Asian restaurants with his daughter.
One of the greatest joys of Raul’s life was being a grandfather. He adored his grandsons, who lovingly called him “Papa.” Time spent with them brought him immeasurable happiness, and during the final months of his life, he was able to spend his days with them in their home of San Antonio.
Raul is survived by his daughter, Christina (Mohamed) Abdalla; his beloved grandchildren, Aziz and Ameen Abdalla; and his siblings, Oscar Macias and Janie Villarreal. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gabriel and Maria Dolores Macias, and his sister, who was his best friend, Connie Macias.
Raul will be remembered for his quiet kindness, his generous heart, and the love he shared with his family. His memory will live on in the laughter, stories, and music that continue to bring comfort to those who knew and loved him.
