It is with heavy hearts and warm memories that we announce the passing of George Michael (Mike) Affleck, who left this world on January 27, 2025, at the age of 72. Mike was born on January 21, 1953, to George Henry and Evelyn Louise Nevels Affleck. He lived life with great purpose, dedication, and a deep love for his family and friends. Mike was preceded in death by his father, George Henry Affleck; his mother, Evelyn Louise Affleck; and his sister, Sharon Barfield (Mike). He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Susan Martin Affleck; daughter Megan Affleck (Kevin Padgett); sons Michael Affleck and Garrett Affleck (Miranda); and his sisters Linda Jordan (Floyd) and Cindy Murphy (Danny). He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Brooks Carter Bennett, Kiersten Marie Affleck, Henry Martin Affleck, and Landon Michael Affleck. He also had a special place in his heart for his numerous nieces and nephews.
Throughout his life, Mike wore many hats and excelled in every project he took on. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, serving as a journeyman lineman for several years. His expertise in electrical wiring led him to a teaching position at Central High School in the vocational program, where he taught numerous young people to become electricians. He then worked as a Deputy Sheriff under Sheriffs James Pearson and Herman Chapman. He left the Sheriff's office to start a logging business with his lifelong friend Larry Evans. Their company was unique in that they used Belgian draft horses to remove downed trees, lessening the damage to remaining trees and terrain. After their company dissolved, Mike went to work at Freeway Ford selling cars. It wasn’t long before he became sales manager, and then general sales manager. During his time in the car business, he worked at Freeway Ford of Columbus, Bill Heard Cadillac, Blount Strange Ford Lincoln Mercury in Montgomery, Gateway Lincoln Mercury Isuzu in Columbus GA, and Acura of Columbus. No matter what the vocation, Mike had an unparalleled work ethic and loyalty. He was known for his quick wit and gift of gab. He could strike up a conversation with anyone. After retiring from the car business, Mike returned to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, working as a civil process server under his former Deputy co-worker, Sheriff Jay Jones. Mike retired from the Sheriff’s Office and went on medical disability after suffering a stroke in 2013.
His true joy came from his family. He supported his children and grandchildren in their love of sports. He was a coach in Dixie Youth Baseball in Smiths Station, including coaching an All-Star team. He had a love of the outdoors. In his younger years, he could be found coon hunting with his father. He delighted in finding friends who shared his love for coon hunting. At one time, he was a partial owner of White Creek Kennels, which produced a Grand Night Champion, a Black and Tan coon dog named Honey. This was one of Mike’s proudest achievements since he got Honey as a puppy and trained her to become a national champion.
Also in his younger years, he was involved in showing horses, roping competitions, and participating in rodeos wherever he could. He always loved rodeos and had hoped to take his youngest grandchildren to the rodeo in Columbus the weekend he died.
Mike had discussed his final wishes on many occasions. He did not want a traditional funeral. He wished to be cremated and didn’t want a viewing. He stated he “wanted a party, where friends and family gathered to share stories and talk about the good times they had with him.” Instead of a traditional funeral, we are having a celebration of his life on Saturday, February 8, starting at 4:00 PM at his home located at 73 Boswell Road, Phenix City, Alabama. The family welcomes all friends, old and new, former co-workers, and friends of the family to participate in this celebration.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Mike’s memory to Truth Spring Academy, where his daughter-in-law, Miranda, teaches, or The Food Mill .
