SSG (Ret) Herbert D. Steele Jr., age 90, of Smiths Station, Alabama passed away on Friday, May 12, 2023 at his home. A graveside service with military honors is planned for 11:00 A.M. EDT, Friday, July 28, 2023 at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, Fort Mitchell, AL.
Born April 19, 1933 in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, he was the son of the late Herbert D. Steele and Thelma Smith Steele.
Mr. Steele served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict with 20 years of service. He was a life-time member of the Smiths Station VFW, he had many occupations during his life to include, a pilot, deputy sheriff for the Lee County Sheriff's Department, private investigator for Lee County, prison guard for the Alabama Prison System and an Over the Road Trucker. He was a lifelong baptist by faith.
Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Steele; son, Gunther Steele, brothers, Robert Lee Steele, Larry W. Steele and sister, Joan Steele Rich.
Survivors include his sister, Sharon M. Watkins, brother, Daniel J. Steele and wife, Gwen, sister, Linda Puent along with many nieces and nephews.
