Nancy was born on April 29, 1932, in Montgomery, Alabama, to the late Ola Gladys Walters. A devoted mother of seven, Nancy’s greatest joy in life was her family. She made sure everyone knew just how deeply she loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Nancy had a special gift for nurturing — whether it was her family or her beautiful garden. She found peace and happiness tending to her roses and could often be found outside planting, pruning, and caring for the flowers, bushes, and trees that brought her so much joy.
Nancy was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Susan Sims. She leaves behind her loving partner of 40 years, Billy Hughes; her sister, Leslie Gibbons; and her children: Darnae Carlisle (John), Donald C. Arndt Jr., David Arndt (Terri), Nancy Ward, Debra Arndt, and Craig Arndt (Michelle); as well as her step-daughter, Gwenette McLeod and step-sons, Jerry McLeod (Kathi) and Gary McLeod (Glenda). She was the proud grandmother of 22 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren — each of whom held a special place in her heart.
Family and friends are invited to gather in her honor on Monday, November 17, 2025, from 4:00–6:00 p.m., for visitation at Striffler Hamby Mortuary, 3770 US-431, Phenix City, AL 36868. A graveside service will follow on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at Lakeview Memorial Gardens, 3800 US-431, Phenix City, Alabama.
Nancy’s warmth, kindness, and love will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her spirit will live on through the family she cherished and the garden she so lovingly tended.
